About Bells

‘Must See’ Broken Hill Experience

Bells Milk Bar is an in tact 1950’s milk bar in South Broken Hill (thanks to Les and Mavis Bell’s 1956 renovation).  It’s famous for its long history, quirky décor, and the ‘out of this world’ old fashioned milkshakes and soda spiders served here.

You can have a similar experience at Bells Milk Bar today as you could have had in the 1950s or 1960s. Imagine sipping a malted milk or traditional soda spider amidst the original chrome fittings and furniture while listening to the ‘latest’ 1950s music or reading a 1956 magazine. You can choose from over 50 original recipe traditional drink flavours, and they’re all made using Bells own handmade syrups and cordials, manufactured in small batches right here on the premises, just like they always have. History has been restored, refreshed and revived, and stepping into the multi-tourism award-winning Bells Milk Bar is like stepping back in time.

‘Out Of This World’ Drinks For Over 100 Years

People have been travelling from far and wide to Bells Milk Bar for ‘out of this world’ malted milks and soda spiders for generations.  Once upon a time, many old milk bars and cafes in Australia made the bases for all their drinks by hand.  At Bells, all our authentic syrups are still handmade to Les Bell’s Famous Secret Recipe here on the premises in Patton Street – just like they have since 1892 when the shop was founded by Fredrick Fenton as a confectioner and cordial maker.  The result is worth bottling…

Keeping The Spirit Alive

After your indulgence, check out the Milk Bar Museum where you will not only learn all about the history of Bells and unearth the fascinating world of Australia’s milk bars and cafés, gaining a valuable insight into a part of our 20th century social history that has all but disappeared.

Situated in the Bells’ original 1950s kitchen and lounge room, it’s a great place to catch a slice of life in the 1950s and 1960s, and also houses an interesting collection of ‘kitchenalia’, as well as local and national milk bar and cafe memorabilia.
